It started with one bag of trash.
Today it's a growing community cleaning up Cyprus and building real local recycling solutions. Picking up trash is the minimum we can do to protect the nature we love.
The Story Behind The Island Keeper
I did not plan to start a movement. In the spring of 2023, I went for a walk along a coastal path in Limassol and couldn't ignore the mess — plastic bottles, food wrappers, cigarette butts, fishing lines. It wasn't new. I had seen it before, many times. But that day, something clicked. I grabbed a trash bag and started picking up.
I posted a few photos on social media, not to show off, but because I was frustrated. The response surprised me. People started reaching out — some wanted to join, others thanked me for doing what they had always wanted to do themselves. Within weeks, the first group cleanup happened.
Since then, The Island Keeper has grown into a proper community. We now organize regular cleanups across Cyprus — beaches, mountain trails, rivers, urban areas. We have partnered with schools, local businesses, municipalities, and environmental organizations.
But this was never just about picking up trash. It's about changing how people relate to their environment. It's about showing that small actions matter, that communities can solve real problems, and that everyone — locals and expats alike — can contribute to keeping this island clean.
Along the way, I started exploring recycling more seriously. That led to Items of Cyprus, a small recycling workshop in Limassol where we take collected plastics and turn them into useful items. It's still early, but the vision is clear: build a local, circular approach to waste — from the beach back into something valuable.
The Island Keeper is not a corporation. It's a grassroots effort that runs on community energy, personal commitment, and the belief that action beats talk. The community continues to grow with every cleanup.

- Workshop in Limassol using open-source recycling machines
- Creating useful items from recycled materials
- Vision: a fully local, circular approach to plastic waste
Plastic Pollution in Cyprus
Cyprus faces a growing plastic pollution problem. Single-use plastics, packaging waste, and marine debris accumulate on beaches, in rivers, and across the landscape. The infrastructure to deal with it is limited. Most plastic in Cyprus is not recycled — it is landfilled or simply left in the environment.
Direct impact
Every piece of plastic removed is one less in the ocean or the soil.
Awareness
Seeing the scale of the problem firsthand changes how people think about waste.
Community pressure
Organized, visible action pushes local authorities and businesses to take responsibility.
